FAQ - GLUED PRESENTATION FOLDER

A
Fibre-cracking on fold lines is a natural characteristic of paper and board, and is more noticeable where heavy ink coverage is intended to go over the fold. Flexpress use a creasing rule and matrix counter force, which is universally recognised as the the best method of creasing folders, to dramatically reduce the effect of fibre-cracking. However it is impossible to eliminate completely without laminating so if you feel this may be an issue with your design please ensure you select a laminated finish as Flexpress can't be held responsible for fibre-cracking when laminating is not chosen.
A
Glued presentation folders are fully assembled and packed in slightly over size A4 double-walled boxes. Bear in mind that a double pocket capacity folder is 10mm wide so we only get about 20 in a box. This equates to 50 boxes for 1000 folders so you'll need some space to store them!
A
A non-capacity folder can comfortably take at least 15 sheets of typical 80gsm bond. Non-capacity simply means there isn't a gusset so there is a point at which the folder won't close comfortably if there are two many inserts. If in doubt, ask for a sample
A
The glue forms an equally strong bond whichever type of laminate you choose.
A
We make hundreds of thousands of folders each year and experience has taught us that 350gsm material offers the best all-round performance in terms of strength and flexibility. Go thinner and the folders are not as strong as they could be and thicker and the folders tend to be too 'springy'
A
If it's a folder design you use regularly, we can set it up as a 'private' product so only you can access it by logging in to our website. If however, it's a design that will only be used once or twice, talk to our bespoke quoting team for a custom quote.
A
It's doubtful we'll be able to use your cutting form. Most folders are designed to be assembled by hand and have the glue tab on the pocket. Our cutting forms are all designed with the tab on the body of the folder as opposed to the pocket to suit mechanical assembly. In addition our cutting forms are all designed at a specific size and cutting depth to speed up job changeovers.
A
Our non-capacity and 5mm capacity over size folders will both fit into a standard C4 envelope. Our double pocket capacity folders which hold 10mm capacity, wont.

FAQ - CASE BOUND BOOKS

A
Not at present. We only bind using a paper-wrapped case.
A
We use a 2000 micron (2mm thick) grey board for the cover and spine, then wrap this with either a 170gsm coated paper or, in the case of an uncoated option, a 140gsm uncoated paper.
A
When books were bound using weaker, EVA hot melt glue, sewn sections added additional strength to stop the pages falling out. PUR Binding, however is much stronger and the pages are hard to pull away from the book without the need for expensive sewn sections. Sewn sections are still the best option if you want your book to lay completely flat when opened, such as for diaries. If this is the case, please ask us for a bespoke quotation.
A
We bind the inner pages using PUR adhesive which is the same glue used on our paper back books and very strong.
A
As a general rule, whether or not you have chosen silk, gloss or uncoated paper for your books pages, we'll always use an uncoated 140gsm paper for the end papers. We can use silk, or gloss if specifically required but please ask us for a bespoke quotation.
A
End papers are a folded sheet of paper that is glued to the inside covers. This, in turn, attaches the inner pages to the book. The opening side of the folded sheet is usually left plain but can be printed if required. Please ask us for a bespoke quotation.
A
The cover protrudes from the inner pages by approximately 3mm at the top, bottom and the opening edge. If you are ddessigning a cover for a case bound book we have a handy 'case size calculator' which can be accessed through our tools menu.
A
The page size is classed as the size of the book so if you select an A4 book, that would be the size for the inner pages. The cover is always slightly bigger.
A
Case binding is when a hard cover is added to the inner pages of a book. The hard cover itself is known as the 'case'.

PUR Perfect Binding - General Questions

A
Novels and colouring books are generally on uncoated paper whereas catalogues, brochures and books containing important photographic images tend to be best on coated papers such as silk or gloss. We'd generally recommend silk over gloss, simply because the less reflection a page has, the easier it is to read.
A
During the manufacturing process, book covers take a lot of punishment. When they are folded, the fibres of the paper crack causing unsightly white lines in the print and weak spots in the material. Adding a layer of plastic laminate to the cover helps to prevent marking whilst making the book much more durable and capable of frequent handling.
A
Not entirely, no. Unlike EVA glue, it will withstand pushing flat but if you want a perfect bound book that lays completely flat you'd need to ask us for a custom quote for a book with sewn-sections, which is quite a lot more expensive. Alternatively, choose a wire-o or spiral bound bound option as both of these will lay complately flat when open.
A
Only with extreme abuse. You can try to press flat a PUR spine and it will maintain its strength and integrity whereas an EVA glued spine will break. Thicker papers, coated papers or even papers with the grain direction running perpendicular to the spine can cause problems with EVA adhesive whereas PUR takes all of these in its stride.
A
The disadvantages are predominently for the printing or binding company: PUR binding requires more daily cleaning and maintenance, is more expensive than EVA and unlike EVA takes 24 hours to fully cure. Fore the buyer though, there are no disadvantages.
A
Yes. Unlike EVA hotmelt adhesive, PUR withstands extremes in temperature. Once it's formed it's bond with the paper, it won't even melt if you put it in the oven! Likewise, even in the fridge, it won't go brittle and break.
A
PUR adhesive forms a chemical reaction with the pages of your book which, after just 24 hours, is stronger than than the paper itself. In other words if you're trying to pull a page out of a PUR bound book, the paper will tear before the glue gives.
A
PUR is by far, a better choice than traditional EVA. Some brands of EVA glues , such as Planamelt, have advanced over the years, to the point that some unscrupulous printing and finishing companies even pass this off as PUR but the truth is they still don't offer the pull resistance or handling resilience that PUR can. EVA glues have been known to break down in extreme climates whereas PUR will stay in tact no matter what the conditions. The only reason not everyone uses PUR is firstly, because it's more expensive and secondly because there is a lot more house-keeping and maintenance required. Once cured, PUR glue can't be remelted and used again so all machinery needs to be thoroughly cleaned after every use. EVA adhesives, on the other hand, can just be left in machines without the need to clean up, for days.

Booklet General Questions

A
Unfortunately not. Whilst at first glance this would seem fair, custom sizes require more work for us to produce. For example: our pre-press department can automate the imposition of standard sizes but custom sizes have to be done manually. We have programmes ready set up on our guillotines for standard sizes but not for custom sizes and custom sizes are much more difficult, and expensive for us to pack.
A
This depends on the books use and your budget. Saddle-stitched booklets tend to lay flatter when opened than perfect-bound books, and are a cheaper option but a perfect-bound booklet gives a better-quality, more professional impression. The thicker the saddle stitched booklet, the less flat it will sit when closed and the more bulge out you'll need to compensate for in the design (the V spine pushes the central pages beyond the cover width meaning more is trimmed off - often causing issues with images or text, such as page numbers that have been designed close to the edges). Perfect-bound books have the same trim off all pages so this is not likely to be an issue.
A
Fibre-cracking on folds is a natural characteristic of paper and is more noticeable where heavy ink coverage is intended to go over the spine. This can be reduced by pre-creasing covers which Flexpress do as a matter of course on cover-weights over 250gsm or can be eliminated completely by choosing to laminate your covers, prior to booklet-making. Unfortunately, on lighter paper stocks there is little we can do to prevent a degree of cracking so it's best to avoid designing covers where there this is likely to be a concern. Please be aware: Flexpress can't be held responsible for fibre-cracking when laminating is not chosen. We can, of course custom quote for bespoke sizes.
A
Yes we can but it is a much slower process than our automated booklet-making so we prefer to quote these as bespoke jobs.
A
Booklets can be either stapled together using fixed length staples or 'stitched' together using staples formed on the fly from reels of stitching wire. Stapled booklets are usually stapled whilst the sheets are flat, then folded whilst with saddle-stitched booklets, the sheets are folded first, then gathered together over a fulcrum or 'saddle' and stitched afterwards. This gives a far superior crease meaning saddle-stitched booklets suffer from far less 'bulge' than stapled booklets. Whilst saddle stitching looks similar in appearance to stapling, the length of the 'stitches' can be optimised to suit the number of pages ensuring a neater and often stronger bind.

Delivery

A
Free delivery only covers Mainland England, Wales and the less remote parts of Scotland. Sorry we don't ship outside of the U.K. but you can arrange your own carrier to collect from us.
A
Yes. You'll have the option to split the ordered quantity over as many delivery addresses as you need when you place your order. Please be aware each extra delivery will cost an additional £6.50.
A
Yes. You can add multiple addresses to the address book in your account and have the goods delivered to any one or even several of them.
A
All goods leave Flexpress in perfect condition so the likelihood is they've been damaged in transit. It's imperative that you take photographic evidence of both the goods and the damaged packaging as we will need this evidence to lodge a claim with the carrier. Any accompanying paperwork must be marked 'Arrived Damaged' - this will prove the damage didn't occur whilst under your supervision. As long as we are able to claim against our carrier, we are happy to replace damaged goods. Without this evidence no claim can be considered.
A
You can select to upgrade your delivery to AM or pre-10am when you place your order. Please be aware there is an additional cost for upgrading the delivery.
A
Usually we send all orders by APC on an overnight next day service so goods will be dispatched on one working day and arrive the next usually by 5pm.
A
Unfortunately not. Delivery is free for clients who order online so if we were to offer a discount for collection, in reality, delivery wouldn't be free.

Artwork

A
The countdown clock shows the time artwork needs to be fully approved by. If your artwork is not approved by the time stated the job is highly likely to be delayed as we are unable to start the production cycle on time.
A
In order to avoid potentially printing the wrong file, we ask that you submit new artwork for each order.
A
We do check files for common printing issues and will notify you if anything is not right. We don't check supplied files for spelling or grammar. It is in your interest to accurately prepare the file as any problems will inevitably cause delays and we won't be held responsible for printing problems caused by incorrectly prepared artwork.
A
You are able to delete and submit new artwork through the website until the job status is marked as 'In Production'. If the job status is in production you must contact us immediately on 0116 2676269 so we can stop any further progress on the job. You will be liable to pay for any work already completed at this stage. Please DON'T email us as the job could have been put into progress by the time your email is read.
A
We try to anticipate any issues that may cause us production delays and quality problems. These can include such things as heavy solid ink coverage with reversed out tints or fine text, landscape booklets with hairline matches split over page spreads or jobs with borders too close to the edge of the page. If you are in any doubt, please contact us beforehand.

Ordering

A

Goods are usually dispatched within the time stated, but sometimes delays may occur due to unforeseen circumstances such as critical machine breakdowns or production issues related to quality on complex jobs. In such cases, we will contact you to discuss possible alternatives.

Please note that once the order leaves our premises, we cannot control the delivery process and are not responsible for any delays in arrival. Additionally, meeting any stated deadline depends on receiving 'approved' artwork by the specified time. Failure to approve a proof copy by the required deadline may affect the final delivery date.

A

Flexpress goes to great lengths to ensure the colors in your printed job match the colors in your file. To achieve this, we use a universal standard known as ISO12647-2, recognized as the best method for ensuring color accuracy and consistency.

We cannot guarantee to match jobs which do not meet these standards, including any previously printed samples. Please be aware that laminated samples, in particular, are impossible to match as the laminate has a tendency to alter the printed colors.

A

Every product is covered by our total satisfaction guarantee, which states that in the event the quality of product or service is sub-standard through any fault of ours, we will reprint or refund—no questions asked.

However, some issues such as colour matching across different printing processes and materials, paper fibre cracking due to folding, and ink coverage and cases where small percentages of jobs may be substandard may not be covered by this guarantee. Nonetheless, we will always work with you to arrive at a sensible conclusion.

Please ensure you email your query or complaint to admin@flexpress.co.uk within 7 days of receipt of your order.

A
We can produce much higher quantities of any required product but can't always work to the same rapid deadlines. Please ask us for a custom quote.

FAQ - BUSINESS CARDS

A
Flexpress only offer a 400gsm board because it offers the perfect compromise between a 450gsm board that many see as too rigid and a 350gsm board that can be seen as flimsy and cheap. Offering just one board thickness helps us keep costs down, avoid errors and improves turnaround times.
A
Laminating is the application of an extremely thin layer of plastic over the surface of the card which serves to both protect the print and add a luxurious feel to the surface of the board. Laminating protects the card and adds to it's longevity which, considering you really want people to keep your card, is no bad thing.
A
Each different type of laminate varies slightly from just 24 microns thick (0.024mm) for gloss laminate to 50 microns (0.05mm) for our linen embossed laminate. Even the thickest laminate doesn't noticeably add a difference to the thickness of the card.
A
Lamination doesn't accept normal writing ink well. Ideally you'd use a permanent marker. If you're looking for a card you can write on, choose our unlaminated cards, or only choose lamination to one side of the card (the side that doesn't need writing on!).
A
Membership cards are generally plastic 'encapsulated', as opposed to laminated. Encapsulating seals the card within a solid plastic border and encapsulation film is generally much thicker than laminating film. There is nothing stopping you using a laminated card for a membership card but encapsulation is probably a better solution.
A
Some people feel 450gsm is too thick and some people feel 350gsm is too thin, so we recommend 400gsm board which nobody seems to complain about!
A
Matt laminate is by far the most popular. It offers extremely good value as a decent balance between protection, tactility and price. Secondly soft-touch laminate which, whilst considerably more expensive offers a luxurious velvety feel that's hard to resist feeling. Some people like a glossy effect, but right now, it tends to be only a small percentage of the cards we produce.
A
A new starch-based laminate is available, but quite simply it isn't as good and still takes almost as long to break down in landfill. Using traditional laminate is the way to ensure your card looks great and is therefore likely to be kept for longer! Flexpress research what we offer carefully and won't offer you anything that's less than it seems, but rest assured, as soon as a worthwhile option becomes commercially available, you'll definitely find it here.

FAQ - PERFECT BOUND BOOKS

A
Very strong. Polyolefin hot melt adhesive is a hybrid glue designed to virtually equal the pull resistance of PUR adhesive but with faster drying times and far less waste.
A
Yes. Unlike traditional EVA hot-melt adhesive, Polyolefin has a much better tolerance to both hot and cold conditions.
A
Only with extreme abuse. We have bound thousands upon thousands of books with this adhesive and not had a single complaint.
A
In printing terms, book covers take a lot of punishment. When they are folded, the fibres of the paper crack causing unsightly white lines in the print and weak spots in the material. FAQ - SPIRAL BOUND BOOKS

A
Both offer similar results enabling the pages not only to lay flat but turn back on themselves a full 360 degrees but wire-o, in our opinion, looks more professional. The lay-flat properties are the main reason people choose either of these binding methods. It's personal choice, of course, but commercially, wire-o tends to be more common; particularly with training companies whereas educational establishments tend to prefer plastic coils. Anywhere safety is a concern, plastic coil is preferred as the wire can be pulled out, straightened and used for other things than its intended purpose.
A
Not if the book was bound properly. The ends of the spiral should be crimped (turned in) which makes it more difficult to wind the spiral off the book pages.
A
Spiral binding suits manuals, notebooks, recipe books; in fact any book where it's helpful to be able to read or write without the need to hold the book and where a wire may not be suitable for safety reasons.
A
The pages are gathered together and punched with a series of holes to the bound edge of the book. The plastic coil is then wound through the holes, trimmed and crimped to form the bind.

FLYERS AND LEAFLETS GENERAL QUESTIONS

A
We offer a range of paper stocks from standard 130gsm for mass distribution to premium 400gsm cardstock for a high-end feel. You can also choose between silk, gloss, or uncoated finishes to match your brand's aesthetic.
A
Yes, you can choose between single-sided or double-sided printing for the same price on most of our standard stocks. Simply upload a two-page PDF or two separate images when placing your order.
A
The most popular sizes are A5 (half a standard page) for handouts and A4 for more detailed information. We also provide DL (envelope size) and A6 options perfect for vouchers or event invitations.
A
Please include a 3mm 'bleed' area around all edges of your design and keep important text at least 5mm away from the edge. This 'safe zone' ensures that your content remains within your design and not get cut off if it's too close.
A
Our standard production time is 2-4 business days, after which your order is shipped via tracked delivery. If you are on a tight deadline, we offer express production and next-day shipping options at checkout.

FAQ - FOLDING BUSINESS CARDS

A
All business cards are supplied creased, ready for folding, but we don't actually fold them. You'll need to do that yourself as you use them.
A
Inevitably, there is a little 'spring' in folded business cards which forces them open a little. We feel 400gsm retains too much of this springiness making for an unpractical card.

FAQ - WIRE-O BOUND BOOKS

Anywhere safety is a concern, plastic coil is preferred as the wire can be pulled out, straightened and used for other things than its intended purpose.
A
Not if the book was bound properly. If you can see where the spine has been closed on the outside of the book, it has been bound incorrectly and the pages could fall out quite easily. The closed spine of the book should always be on the inside of the book (usually inside the back cover) and this prevents pages falling out.
A
Wire-o binding suits manuals, notebooks, recipe books; in fact any book where it's helpful to be able to read or write without the need to hold the book.
A
The pages are gathered together and punched with a series of holes to the bound edge of the book. The pages are then placed over the prongs of a preformed 'binding comb' before the gap in the wire is closed shut.

FAQ - INTERLOCKING PRESENTATION FOLDER

A
Fibre-cracking on folds is a natural characteristic of paper and board and is more noticeable where heavy ink coverage is intended to go over the spine. Flexpress use a creasing rule and matrix counterforce, which is univerally recognised as the the best method of pre-creasing folders, to dramatically reduce the effect of fibre-cracking. A
The locking mechanisms that we use at Flexpress use a clever 'barbed' tab which, when engaged into the slot, is difficult to remove and therefore very strong. Our double-pocket capacity folder can comfortably hold the weight of 10mm of documents and will remain secure. Most people choose glued folders because they either don't want the hassle of any assembly, or they prefer the aesthetic look of glued folders but from a pure strength perspective you won't be disappointed with our interlocking range.
A
They come flat-packed in specially designed boxes ready for you to assemble, as and when necessary. Interlocking folders, when flat, take up considerably less space than fully assembled glued folders so if storage space is a consideration, interlocking folders may be the way to go.
A
A non-capacity folder can comfortably take at least 15 sheets of typical 80gsm bond. Non-capacity simply means there isn't a gusset so there is a point at which the folder won't close comfortably if there are two many inserts. If in doubt, ask for a sample.

A
Sadly, we don't have the staff resources to assemble interlocking folders, which by their nature, are a DIY product. By comparisson, our entire glued folder range are machine assembled and this is not possible with interlocking folders.

FAQ - DESK & JOTTER PADS

A
Thanks to our quick and efficient printing service, we can dispatch pad orders under 100 quantity the next working day if they are ordered pre-12 noon. However, orders over 100 will add an extra day on the turnaround time.
A
The synthetic resin based adhesive we use offers the perfect balance between a strong bind, and ease of leaf removal. If in doubt, ask for a sample pad.
A
To ensure our printed work arrives in the best possible conditions, goods are packaged up to to a maximum of 15Kg per box, in extra strong double-walled corrugated boxes and taped with reinforced tape.
A
It's completely up to you! Most orders are for either 25 leaves, or 50 leaves, however if you want the pads to last longer, why not order 100 leaves?
A
We find uncoated materials allow us to provide the best quality pads for our customers. Uncoated materials are easy to write on, allow for a good quality bind, and are competitively priced.

FAQ - POSTERS & ARTS PRINTS

A
For art prints, artists often buy a range of sizes, often of the same image, to suit the individual needs of their clients. For advertising purposes the general rule of thumb is the bigger the better, so A2 works well and for corporate notices A4 and A3 work just fine to fit in convenient, noticeable places.
A
For sketches and watercolour art prints, our uncoated range of materials works rather well as they mimic the original material and look more authentic. Otherwise, coated papers work well for corporate notices and advertising. Whatever material you choose, we think you'll be delighted with the result.
A
Laminating serves well to protect the surface of the print but we'd never recommend laminating an uncoated material. For notices and posters hanging in areas attracting dirt or moisture we'd always recommend adding a protective laminate.
A
Folding of large sheets can dramatically reduce the cost of postage but it's unlikely anyone would want their beautiful art print arriving with unsightly creases so in this instance, folding is not recommended. For corporate notices and advertising, a few fold lines may not be as important and postage costs are likely to be a bigger factor so that's why we offer folding as an option.

FAQ - TABBED DIVIDERS

A
In our experience, the holes where the tabs are inserted into the binder are the weakest part of the divider so for tabs which are likely to be used often, we'd recommend going for one of the heavier materials and choosing an overall laminate in either gloss or matt. This will help protect the whole divider, not just the tab itself.
A
Switching between cutting tools is time-consuming, so right now, to help keep down the cost, we only offer one standard shape cutting tool.
A
We can do more than 10 tabs but you'd need to ask us for a bespoke quote and they will most likely take a little longer. Please bear in mind we need at least 3mm from the text on the tab to the edge of the tab so be careful the heading on the tab is not too small to be practical.
A
Yes we can make the divider any size you want but the tab itself will always protrude 13mm. Please ask us for a bespoke quote if you need anything unusual.
A
Yes. We are happy to do this. Please ask us for a custom quote.

FAQ - TENT CARDS

A
All tent cards come ready taped for self assembly. We can assemble them for you however, simply contact us for a competitive custom quote!
A
A table talker is positioned upright whith portrait panels, while a tent card takes on a 'tent' shape and sits on it's base panel. Consequently, table talkers offer additional room for showcasing advertisements and artwork compared to tent cards.
A
Laminating table talkers can be advantageous for several reasons. Lamination adds a protective layer, making them more durable against spills, stains, and frequent handling. It enhances the visual appeal by providing a glossy or matte finish, which can make the colors and design elements pop, thereby attracting more attention. Moreover, laminated table talkers are easier to clean and maintain, ensuring a longer lifespan for your promotional material. However, whether to laminate or not depends on your specific use case, environment, and desired aesthetics. If you anticipate heavy use or exposure to potential damage, laminating your table talkers could be a wise choice for their longevity and visual appeal.
