Introduction and strategy

Flexpress is a private limited company based in Leicestershire at Coal Cart Road, Birstall.

Our main activity is the production of printed materials primarily for other graphics professionals. To achieve this, we use a variety of different materials, digital and lithographic printing processes and finishing operations.

We recognise that our operations have the potential to negatively impact our environment, so our aim is to minimise this as much as possible. We will continue to work towards reducing the environmental impacts of our business and operating in an environmentally responsible manner.

The key points of the Company’s strategy to achieve this are:
  • Integrating the consideration of environmental concerns and impacts into all decision making and operational activities.
  • Promoting environmental awareness among employees and encouraging responsible environmental practices throughout the business.
  • Meeting or exceeding all environmental legislation applicable to the Company, including the safe handling, transport, storage, and disposal of environmentally sensitive materials.
  • Minimising waste by continuously reviewing operations to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Encouraging efficient use of materials and resources including water, electricity, raw materials, and other non renewable resources.
  • Promoting recycling wherever possible, including waste paper, aluminium printing plates, and plastics.
  • Using environmentally accredited materials wherever practical and feasible.
  • Avoiding unnecessary use of hazardous materials and seeking safer alternatives whenever possible.
  • Continually improving environmental performance through responsible investment and operational improvements.

Responsibility

This environmental policy applies to all our operations. Steve Wenlock, Managing Director, is responsible for ensuring this policy is implemented. However, all employees have a responsibility within their own area to ensure that the aims and objectives of the policy are achieved.

2020 to date

As a result of Coronavirus, our investment in environmental initiatives had to be scaled back temporarily. Despite this, we have continued to make significant gains in improving our environmental performance:

  • Reduced our electricity consumption in comparison to turnover by 12%.
  • Reduced paper waste by 5%.
  • Reduced general waste by 8%.
  • Changed our delivery van and one company car to all electric models.
  • Installed EV charging points.
  • Replaced all lighting with energy efficient LED alternatives.
  • Installed motion activated lighting in washrooms, kitchens, and corridors.
  • Switched to starch based void fill for packaging.
  • Ensured all papers and boards offered are environmentally responsible.
  • Installed roof based Solar Panels capable of generating approximately 81,000 Kwh per annum of electricity.
  • Moved all heating and cooling systems to air source heat pumps.
  • Recycle 100% of wastepaper.
  • Recycle 100% of aluminium plates.

Targets

  • To further reduce materials wastage by at least 1% per annum.
  • To further reduce electricity usage through investment in modern, energy efficient machinery.
  • To become more actively involved in environmental initiatives and organisations.
  • To work towards carbon neutrality.

Resources

We will ensure that the necessary resources are available to enable us to achieve our environmental targets.

Monitoring and auditing

Progress against these targets will be monitored during monthly management meetings.
